Hyacinth Bean-Ruby Moon
Hyacinth Bean-Ruby Moon
Welcome hummingbirds , bees, and butterflies to your garden with this striking ornamental vine. It is known for its vibrant foliage and attractive deep pink to ruby colored flowers. The heart-shaped leaves create a lush and dramatic backdrop. As the season progresses, the flowers give way to glossy, deep purple pods which further enhance its ornamental appeal.
It will grow vigorously up a trellis, arbor, arch, or create a fun structure for it to climb. One year we made a teepee with it for the kids to play in! It can be used to create a living wall, or a privacy structure. This vine thrives in a warm climate and loves full sun. The vine will reach 10-20’.
Flowers can be eaten raw or steamed, and used as a garnish. Mature seed pods should be boiled twice before consuming.
We start our seeds indoors and plant the seedlings after all threat of frost is gone. Seeds can also be sown directly into the ground. Germination takes place within 5-12 days. The seedling grows quickly and is a fun one to observe while it develops. It makes a great science observation for young children! When planting, use 12” spacing.
